BIRMINGHAM - The Barons fell about five feet short in their 6-5 loss to Mobile Monday night at Regions Park.
With runners on first and second base in the ninth inning, Dayan Viciedo lined a two-out single to center field, and Evan Frey unloaded a bullet to cut down a streaking John Shelby III at home plate to end the game.
The final out capped a wild night at Regions Park that saw the Barons come back from a 4-0 deficit in the seventh inning to tie the game.
The home team’s bats were silent for much of the night, unable to figure out BayBears starting pitcher Jarrod Parker. Arizona’s top prospect allowed just one earned run and four hits through six innings before watching his bullpen surrender his lead.
Justin Cassel, making his first start for the Barons this season, started out shaky. Last season’s Southern League ERA champion allowed four runs (three earned) through three innings before calming down and shutting out the BayBears the rest of the way. In all, he tossed seven innings and struck out four batters while walking two.
John Lujan (1-4) took the loss after allowing a two-out, two-run double to Peter Clifford.
The two teams will play game three of their six-game set on Tuesday night. John Ely (6-1, 3.36) gets the start against Cody Evans (3-8, 4.71). First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
