Woman shot in the head in Birmingham; person in custody

A person is in custody following a shooting in Birmingham that left a woman dead.
The Birmingham Police Department reports the shooting happened about 7:14pm CT Tuesday, November 3, 2009, in the 400 block of 1st Street West.
The victim is identified as Tiffany Edwards, 19, of Birmingham.
When officers arrived at the location, the found a person lying on the ground from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Witnesses state there was an altercation between the suspect and the victim’s family prior to the shooting.
The victim was transported to U.A.B. Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue for treatment and later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.
A person has been taken into custody, but has not been charged.
There have been 53 homicides in Birmingham in 2009, compared to 70 at this time in 2008.
