Melinda Umphrey, the wife of former Shelton State Community College President Thomas Umphrey, has agreed to plead guilty to three counts of wire fraud.  She, reportedly, has also agreed to forfeit $150,000.00.

The 48-year old Umphrey, of McCalla, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.00.  Prosecutors say Umphrey was fraudulently employed at Shelton State for about a year and a half, with an annual salary of about $40,000.00.

Federal investigators looking into corruption in the state’s two-year college system found that Umphrey performed no legitimate work to earn more than $156,000.00 dollars in gross wages and benefits.
