Residents of the tiny Alabama town of Notasulga are rallying around a local fixture after his eviction from the post office.
“Sammy” the cat was banned from the building after someone wrote in to complain about the cat’s presence.
“They said ‘This is a federal building and he doesn’t pay federal taxes so he can’t come in’,“ said postal worker Rochelle Langford.
Before his banishment Sammy spent most of his time lounging in the post office’s window.
Sammy’s supporters think they’ve found a way to move him safely back in.
They’ve rented a P.O. Box in his name.
Post office workers say they’ll allow Sammy back in, but will try to keep him out of the way of customers.

Sammy the cat is a God-loved creature.
I hope he is inside the post office to keep out of the harsh weather conditions. Do the townspeople feed him and provide him with a clean litter box indoors?
I hoped a professional would speak up. Thanks for stepping up to the plate.
I know plenty of people who have allergies, including myself. I am horrendously allergic to certain common scents- including the aroma of cooked fish, oddly enough. (Going to restaurants requires considerable self-control and a couple of antihistamines!) Artifical orange and lemon scents give me an instant violent headache; and I don’t walk, I race down the detergent aisle in the supermarket, or I start to cough and wheeze until I can’t breathe. But- you know what? I carry a kerchief and discreetly put it over my nose, if I must (sometimes I can just hold my breath!) I do know one or two people who have such severe allergies to bee stings that there is a possibility of anaphalaxis. They haven’t tried to ban the bees, or the local bee keepers: they carry Benadryl, or an ampule of epinephrine. But theirs are idiosyncratic reactions. People with routine allergies can usually control them with antihistamines. You can’t control the world; you can only control your reaction to it.
Golfish0, as “someone who is fatally allergic to both cats and dogs”, why don’t you go to an allergist and start taking allergy shots? I’m a doctor of immunology and if you’re so concerned about going into anaphylaxis, I highly recommend this medical course of action. You remind of people who want peanuts banned from airplanes or perfume on people who work in public areas because of allergic responses, but you’re unwillingly to personally address your problems. You’d rather the rest of society change because of your medical condition. I got to agree with the other 2 postings that you need to get a life.
pdid was right, goldfish0 is a huge drama queen and big ZERO! if u are “deathly” allergic to animals then u couldn’t even go outside because cat and dog dander is in the air. but if u dont’ want this cat in the post office because he doesn’t pay federal taxes then u must not want anyone who doesn’t work,(ie minors, unemployed indigent)to go into the post office either. maybe what needs to happen is YOU don’t need to go in…ever hear of HOME DELIVERY? not availiable in your area? get someone else to go in for you. oh, wait…maybe they can’t…they might go into anaphalactic shock when they touch your mail! as long as the cat isn’t pissin on your mail what do you care anyway…children dying of cancer, child pornogrophers/molesters, AIDS, american soldiers dying in foreign countries any your main concern is a cat! GET A LIFE!!
It is possible to be fatally allergic to something. It is called anaphylactic shock. It is when your throat starts closing up and choking you. Even if you can make it to a hospital you still might not survive. Cats can cause that for me. Please do not call me a drama queen when I have to consider my life or death. This is a serious medical situation for some people, not a drama situation. Plus the post office can be at a huge liability for this as well.
Give me a break. It’s not even possible to be fatally allergic to cats, unless you eat them. The only allergies that are fatal are food allergies. Even though I’m allergic to cats, I’d rather have Sammy in a building than a drama queen like goldfish or anyone else who would complain about this.
As someone who is fatally allergic to both cats and dogs and has had to quit employment and not shop in certain places due to its impact on my health, I DO NOT appreciate the fact that a cat, an animal that someone can be very allergic to, is allowed like this in a public building. This puts allergic people’s health in danger and sets the post office up for a serious liability. Please keep the safety of others in mind and keep cats out of public Federal buildings, period. The last thing I need is a life-threatening trip to the post office that can land me in the hospital.
I was really happy to read that The great residents of the tiny Alabama town of Notasulga have helped Sammy get back into his home. Proud of you! Coatesville, Pa!
Some people have nothing better to do than make trouble. This sounds like a personal grudge/ bully situation. Kudos to the town for stepping up to the plate for Sammy!
