Attorney Jim Parkman is now defending John Katopodis in his federal fraud case.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—- Two attorneys who have represented HealthSouth founder Richard Scrushy have signed on to defend former Birmingham City Councilman John Katopodis.
Gregory John Katopodis faces a 98 count federal indictment.
Jim Parkman and Martin Adams filed their appearance paperwork on Katopodis’ behalf in federal court this week.
Both Parkman and Adams represented Scrushy during his corporate fraud trial, which ended in a complete acquittal.
Parkman initially defended Scrushy at the outset of his public corruption case, but was not a part of the legal team during the trial in which he was convicted along former Governor Don Siegelman.
Katopodis, a former City Councilman and former Jefferson County Commissioner, was indicted last fall on federal fraud charges.
In a 98 count indictment, Katopodis is accused of gambling at casino’s with money from a charity designed to provide computers to underprivileged children.
Katopodis has pleaded not guilty.
The charity, called Computer Help for Kids, was created by Katododis, Scrushy and Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford.
HealthSouth later sued Katopodis, claiming he was not spending the charity’s money appropriately.
The lawsuit later settled and the terms were not released to the public.
