BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—- Steve Sayler has resigned as Birmingham’s Finance Director.

Acting Mayor Carole Smitherman accepted Sayler’s resignation Monday afternoon.

Smitherman said Sayler’s departure was part voluntary and part what was best for Birmingham.

Smitherman also said that the comprehensive financial report she requested last week shows the finance department had not been forthcoming about some of the city’s expenditures.

She claimed she would offer a more detailed report tomorrow in front of the full City Council.

Larry Langford’s mayoral office was vacated last Wednesday when he was convicted on all 60 counts in a federal public corruption case.

Smitherman automatically took over as acting-Mayor.

Monday the city’s Election Commission set a special election on December 8 to elect a Mayor to fill the rest of Langford’s term.
