News release from Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office:
On Saturday, May 23, Memorial Day weekend, the Sheriff’s Office responded along with Valley Head Police Department to Valley Head Drugs, which had been reported as burglarized. The front door had been smashed, causing approximately $500 in damage, and the items taken were 100 Hydrocodone pills. The Drug Store had video surveillance, which was examined, as well as surveillance footage from other local merchants. Valley Head Police Department initiated the investigation which was later handed over to Inv. Mitchell Dendy at the Sheriff’s Office. A lot of information was put out into the community, and with the assistance of Agent Jim Phillips of the Drug Task Force, Investigator Dendy began to explore all avenues to obtain leads on suspects.
Enough information was obtained within the last ten days to lead investigators to the residence of Corey Gene Ingram, 31, in Fort Payne. Inv. Dendy, Agent Phillips, Valley Head Police Department Officers, and Fort Payne Police Department approached the residence last night, and during the course of talking with Ingram, received enough information to arrest him. He had reportedly purchased items at the pharmacy before the incident of burglary. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with Theft of Property 2nd Degree, Burglary 3rd Degree, and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance. He remains at the DeKalb County Detention Center without bond at this time.
Sheriff Harris said, “I am really proud of Mitch and the Task Force Guys for their work on this case – they have pretty much been working around the clock to develop information and leads on suspects. We are grateful for the cooperation and assistance we received from Valley Head, Mentone, and Fort Payne Police Departments, as well as the valuable information we received from concerned citizens and merchants in the Valley Head area. This is a really sad situation in that this guy would go to such lengths to obtain drugs like this – I hope it serves to remind us how dangerous it can be to become dependent on prescription medications. They can become just as deadly as any other drug.”

From the SAMA Foundation’s advocacy video, “Addiction: The Silent Epidemic Targeting Our Youth,“ no one chooses to be a drug addict. Dr. Nora Volkow,M.D., Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, states in the video, “How can we comprehend the concept of a person that wants to stop doing something and they cannot despite catastrophic consequences…we’re not speaking of little consequences…these are catastrophic…and yet they cannot control their behavior.“ I pray this young man survives his addiction problem and finds the help he so needs.
