GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The captain of the Ruth Volunteer Fire
Department has been charged in a string of arsons on Brindley
Mountain.

Steven Christopher Owens, a 24-year-old resident of Arab, was
charged with five counts of second-degree arson and released from
the Marshall County jail on a $5,000 bond Saturday.

Owens has been a member of the Ruth Volunteer Fire Department
for more than one year. Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls said
Monday he didn’t know if Owens had a lawyer.

Walls said his office got a request four weeks ago to help the
Ruth department investigate a string of arson cases in the Ruth
community, which is just outside of Arab. Three unoccupied homes
burned in July and August, and two others burned before July.
