House Approves Resolution Praising Miss California

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  - The Alabama House has approved a resolution that praises Miss USA contestant Carrie Prejean for speaking out against gay marriage.

The House approved the resolution Thursday by Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery on a voice vote.

Prejean was competing as Miss California and finished second after answering a question from judge Perez Hilton concerning gay marriage during Sunday night’s televised pageant. She said she felt marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Love said Prejean stuck to her convictions even if it meant losing the pageant.

Love said he has received a number of e-mails and phone calls from across the country since introducing the resolution. He said more than half of those disagreed with the resolution.

What is the purpose of asking contestants questions as part of the competition? Historically, it has been to judge poise under pressure, not political correctness. Miss California exhibited admirable poise under pressure by answering according to the dictates of her conscience, even when she knew the cost could be high.

Miss California had the right to her opinion about gay marriage, everyone does but, The Alabama House should not have wasted their time to issue a resoltion about this.
Do you think America as a Nation should go back to slavery or take the right of blacks or women to vote back?  These are rights given to every American under the constitution.
Marriage is a right that every American should have, it protects the right of a spouse and allows benefits to the spouse that, if not married, they would not have.  Gay marriage is just as much a civil rights issue as the abolition of slavery and the right to vote for blacks and women.

So what’s next… bringing back slavery?  That’s where Alabama is headed with this resolution.  Think about it people.

it’s unconsionable that the legislature of this state would waste taxpayers money passing such a useless resolution.  That group of politicians can’t pass any type of legislation that actually does some good for the people of this state, but they can waste time praising a dizzy blonde from another state who doesn’t know how to speak the English language.  Amazing!  Let the people who approve of this pay their salaries. I’m done with them.

I find it interesting that this girl has taken such a lashing for answering an obviously loaded question.  How is it that our population doesn’t see this man asking this question as a conflict of interest.  For him to take such offense to a very honest, yet respectful response should inspire us to call into question his ability to judge w/o prejudice!

While I believe that she should be supported for her opinion, I don’t think that the legislature should have taken the time to do this when they could be attending to more important business.  That being said, I believe that all states should have their citizens vote on whether or not to allow civil unions, for gays, that are legally similar to a marriage.

We don’t have to agree or accept other people’s lifestyle or religion.  That doesn’t mean we can’t accept and befriend everyone around us.
Why are we scolding someone for answering a question?  She was honest, she explained herself, even if we don’t agree with her, she told the truth about how she felt, rather than giving a superficial answer and I commend her for that.

I’m proud of Miss California’s honest answer.  She didn’t “rub it in anyone’s face,“ nor did she state it in a hurtful manner.  Perez asked a question and she answered.  Plain and simple.  Just because you don’t agree does not give you the right to attack her - it only indicates your insecurity.  Can we just move on and leave her alone now?  It’s over.

I am proud of Miss California for answering the question honestly. She did not deserve at all the criticism that she received from Perez Hilton.
That said, did Alabama really have to approve a resolution that praises her?
I am a gay man myself and though I may not always agree with the opinions of others, I do value them. That’s the great thing about being an American. We have the freedom to say or believe in whatever we choose.
I just think that the Alabama House’s time could have been better spent on other pressing issues besides that resolution….
