House Approves Resolution Praising Miss California
» 22 Comments | Post a Comment

MONTGOMERY, Ala.  - The Alabama House has approved a resolution that praises Miss USA contestant Carrie Prejean for speaking out against gay marriage.

The House approved the resolution Thursday by Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery on a voice vote.

Prejean was competing as Miss California and finished second after answering a question from judge Perez Hilton concerning gay marriage during Sunday night’s televised pageant. She said she felt marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Love said Prejean stuck to her convictions even if it meant losing the pageant.

Love said he has received a number of e-mails and phone calls from across the country since introducing the resolution. He said more than half of those disagreed with the resolution.

Again…The most important point is being missed by the passion and prejudice for or against the issue.  The MAIN proplem is that the legislature is wasting time by composing and voting on resolutions of any sort when they desperatly need to try and actually pass legislation that matters to Alabamians.

This young lady deserves praise for standing up for what is right. As for tolerance the bible says it is abomlnation to God and if we are going to tolerate this should we also tolerate pedifiles to. I know your going to say its not the same and this would be worse, but both are against nature and wrong. Of course you don’t need to use the bible, common sense should be enough for anyone to know its wrong.By the way were did “gays” come from, they sure wasn’t created by God, and the bible will bear it out.

It seems to me the majority of the people are missing much of the point of this controversy.  The issue is TOLERANCE!  It is extremely important when preaching it to others, yet seems to be an incredibly elusive concept to practice.  I personally believe you should be able to love and marry or live with or whatever you feel like doing with whomever you fall in love with.  No further comment and no one else’s concern. However, I feel the question itself was innapropriate to be asked at all.  It is not a question that allows an intelligent or profound answer.  It was a question asking for an opinion.  There was no way for Miss California to answer the question fairly.  She answered honestly and should be offered the same tolerance for her opinion as the opposing side expects to have from others for theirs.  It is certainly inappropriate for the subject to ever become a national debate because it is a personal choice and no one expects to be told what to do with their personal business so long as they are not harming anyone else.  You are entitled to disagree, but that is all you entitled to do.  It is additionally a concern that no one has brought up the issue of having an openly gay (and therefore likely not exactly neutral on the issue) individual ask a question such as that to a contestant in the first place.  What in the world could possibly be the value in it?  There is no controversy in asking what should be done to promote world peace.  That could have been answered in a profound or intelligent manner.  Miss California was forced to offer her opinion by the nature of the question itself and she is entitled to all the same rights that we all expect and are entitled to.  This is an absurd debate and choosing a side automatically puts one in a situation of hypocrisy. You cannot shout and fight for tolerance without losing just by the very nature of the definition of the concept itself.  Open up a dictionary, look in the mirror and then Wake Up People!!!

Forget the issue.  I am embarrassed that the legislature is composing and approving resolutions of ANY sort.  What a waste of time.  How about writing and approving legislation…your JOB….

I disagree that it is an issue of civil rights. Civil rights should be extended to all people regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity. We choose whether to participate in sexual relationships whether our inclinations are heterosexual or homosexual. I do not think our sexual choices are a matter of civil rights. I also do not think that a person should be required to subscribe to the politically correct social agenda to win Miss USA. Our country was founded by people who stood up for their beliefs, as Miss California did in the competition.

Last time… I also agree with the judges decision to not give her the crown, as Miss America it would have been her job to represent ALL Americans.  Not just the straight ones.  Should she have been penalized for her opinion? Uh.. YEAH.  Is she wrong for her opinion?  An echoed NO.  Would we want a Miss America that was pro-separate but equal?

An issue like gay marriage is, has always been and will always be an issue of civil rights, equality and freedom until gay marriage is legally recognized by all 50 states.  Not everyone has to support it, not everyone has to like it, but it really is the American way.  And that’s why I’m proud to be an American!

WTF? Why isn’t the Alabama House focusing on more important things like making sure qualified teachers get to keep their jobs?!?! Recently, a friend of mine got pink slipped because there isn’t enough money to keep him at school.  Or how about the near 9% unemployment rate?  Or wait.. Free the Hops?

Anything would be more important, and appropriate, than this.  A governing body shouldn’t be allowed to show personal bias like this.  It’s bigotry at its worst.  I’m constantly struggling with my love-hate relationship with this state.  I’m a young professional and I’m torn between staying in AL so I can have an impact or taking my potential and $$$ elsewhere.

What’s on trial here is not what she said, it’s the fact that Alabama legislature has found it necessary to pass this resolution supporting her.  It’s BS. There are so many other important things to be concerned with, not to mention this resolution does NOT speak for all Alabamians nor was it even necessary.

Additionally, in response to an earlier comment, while Miss California most likely did lose the crown due to what she said, it wasn’t all on Perez Hilton’s shoulders.  He wasn’t the only person judging her; he merely asked the question.  The other judges disagreed strongly with what she said, and that is reflected in the massive low scores she received from all the judges.  One low score from one judge would not have been enough to cause her to lose the crown.

I was appalled that this young woman lost the crown because of her answer.  She spoke quite well in answering the question and explaining why she believed that way.  She answered the question she was asked in an excellent manner. That’s all she was required to do to win.  The Judge simply did not like what she said.  I don’t think he was qualified to Judge. He penalized her for what she said , not the skill in how she answered the question.  Are there right or wrong answers? No, only right or wrong ways to answer the question.  Not everyone agreed with Ms. North Carolina’s answer, but she won.  What if she had said she agreed with the bailout?  Then what?  Since answers vary, the issue should be the “communication skills” that the contestant uses to answer the question.  We will never completely agree on all the complicated issues we face in the USA.  This Judge exhibited biased thinking and Judging because it was obvious that he was for gay marriage and wanted the contestant to answer showing agreement with him.  That’s not fair. She was asked to give her opinion and she gave it, he on the other hand should not have judged her negatively because he disagreed with her answer.  He was not asked for his opinion.  If this is the way it is going to be I suggest that the Miss America Pageant be discontinued.  A poor choice was made in choosing this Judge, he even looked horrible, from his hair down to his feet.  I don’t think he knows what beauty, charm and intelligence is. He voted like a hypocrite and put his beliefs above that of the contestant, which should be against the Judging rules. Because this Judge was biased I think both ladies should be Miss America 2009 and share the crown.
