Alabama is facing a crisis level of premature births that’s driving up healthcare costs and special education budgets.  That’s according to a recent report from the March of Dimes.

The national cost of pre-term births is about $26 billion a year.  The average hospital stay for a preemie is 49 days at a cost of about $50,000.
And prematurity is the number one cause of death in the first month of life.

Nbc13 HD’s Lisa Crane takes an in-depth look at how Birmingham doctors are dealing with the situation in her Fact Finder report.

Lisa, Thanks for being so kind when you spoke with us.Just to let you know parker is doing fine.He is 36 weeks,3 pounds 14 ounces and doing well.He is on room oxygen and breathing on his own. We are thinking it should only be another three or four weeks before he is able to come home.Once again thanks to lisa and crew.
