Alabama Unemployment Numbers Rising

BIRMINGHAM,Ala.—According to recent numbers released by the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations, Alabama’s unemployment is on the rise.
The state’s unemployment rate jumped to 6.7% in December 2008 after more than 14,000 jobs were cut. In November 2008 the rate was 6.0%.
Taking a closer look at the December 2008 numbers, 5.3% of people were out of work in Tuscaloosa County. 5.9% were unemployed in Jefferson County and 4.4% were out of jobs in Shelby County at the end of 2008. The last time the state’s unemployment rate was high was in July 1993 when the rate registered at 6.9%. The highest all time unemployment rate was December 1982 at 14.4% Though Alabama’s unemployment rate has increased, it is below the national unemployment rate of 7.2 %.
