Two eighth-graders were suspended after a gun was found Thursday at Smith Middle School in Birmingham.
According to Michaelle Chapman, spokesperson for the Birmingham City School System, a teacher called Principal Charles Willis late in the school day reporting she had heard that a gun was in the school. She had been told a weapon wrapped in a jacket was in a hallway.
Willis found a .25 caliber piston at the spot the teacher had indicated. It was not loaded.
The Birmingham Police Department worked with school staff to investigate the incident. They determined two eighth-graders had been involved with the gun on school grounds.
The boys have been charged with Class III violations of the code of student conduct. They have been suspended pending a hearing. They could face expulsion and being sent to alternative school.
